Im not exactly sure what it is but my desire to ride the Classic 500 is getting out of control!
It could be the fact that when I was growing up in Kathmandu Enfields where the most bad ass things on the streets. The sound of their “thumper” engines was phenomenal! In those days they where plagued with oil problems and the kick starter was rumored to have injured a few legs.
The fact that the bike is manufactured in virtually the same way it was in the 60’s allows you the same experience your grandfather might have had whilst whistling around town on a Bullet 500. Which I find very appealing!
Its not fast and clocks in a little under 30 horsepower. Apparently it cruises perfectly at around 90km an hour. Which is more than enough for me!
You can only get these in India at a cost of around 3’000 Chf! Find a brand new Triumph for that price!
My cousin is in the process of importing a Bullet 500 which took him from India all the way to Nepal last summer. I’ll definitely be keen to hear how much it cost him to get it road ready in switzerland!
Im sure alot of readers know about Non-Format.. Probably one of my favorite design studios. Always really admired their work and enjoyed the interview. Its nice to get into the heads of creatives you admire.
I have posted on Dieter Rams a bunch of times now but I just cant help it. He is a God. As a worshipper I have to thank the power of Ebay. I paid less than 100 Chf for a Braun Atelier poweramp and record player. The Atelier series came out in the early eighties making it the same age as me. Its amazing that something that old can look as though it was created yesterday. Just proves that good design is timeless. The Scandyna Mini Pods are another story, they look pretty space age and the sound is incredible. Since the weather outside is dreary I thought Id create a short video taking a closer look at the Braun Atelier.
Because Dilla is a master in his own field I thought I would play a track off his amazing album, Donuts.
Could someone please let me know if they ever run across the Vitsoe 620 chair or sofa. Like everything by Rams the chair is perfectly designed. I have never run into one or sat on it but it looks pretty promising from the pictures. Its def. on the list of furniture I’d like to own. Im glad Vitsoe decided to re-issue it!
I have posted about tenue de nimes, a denim inspired boutique in amsterdam before on twitter. It doesnt happen often that a customer can love a store before ever setting foot into it. But thats exactly what happened. If I had to put my finger on it, I guess its thanks largely to the care thats put into everything they release. Their logo and web page are superbe. The pictures of the store are always selected carefully. It seem as they have a certain standard in quality to anything they release online. Literally designing their online presence so well that one is forced to pay attention.
The journal de nimes was the natural next step for the tenue de nimes team. I saw it on issuu and was so impressed I wanted a hard copy. Fast forward a couple days later and both issue 3 and 4 where lying @ my doorstep.
This thursday I was lucky enough to visit the Zona Tortona in milan. The smaller furniture and objects fair beside the big Salone de Mobile I usually really enjoy fairs that are embedded into a city setting rather than different stands created in a huge hall. So the Tortona was right up my alley. We sped from one neighborhood to the next in the metro, trams and taxis. Visiting the stands as well as our favorite show rooms. The most interesting thing about the whole day was observing the people.
In typical Italian fashion, I started the day with an expresso and ended it with a Pizza.
Been hearing a lot online about the Ace Hotel in New York. It seems its unusual concept has garnered quite some attention. I’ve read countless tweets about people spending time in the lounge just hanging out.
So I was glad to come across this video of the small design collective Roman & Williams that designed the interior for the Ace. They explain the process and where their pieces come from. Watch the video for the shots of the Ace alone. The hotel is beautiful and after watching this one understands why lazying away in that lounge must be nice.
Let me tell you a little secret, the women in the picture above IS REAL!!! how crazy is that? The installation is made by Alexa Medea. She uses acrylic paint to draw on real objects to transform them into the painting! If you look at the hands and feet of the woman in the picture below, you see that she is real.
Here is what Alexa Medea has to say about her work: My painting technique pushes the boundaries of perception, compressing 3D space into a 2D plane, effectively blurring the lines between art and life. The living paintings series is my spin on reality. By wrapping my subject in a mask of paint, I skew the way that the core of the subject is perceived.
Typically, when you look at a painting, you’re looking at an artist’s interpretation of the subject painted on canvas. In my artistic interpretation of the subject, I paint directly on top of the subject I am referencing rather than using canvas. Essentially, my art imitates life – on top of life. For example, with Portrait of a Self-Portrait you are simultaneously looking at a portrait I painted of myself, a photo I took of myself, and at me.
Some companies seem to get everything right. There is nothing Teenage Engineering does that is not next level. I first caught on to them because of the then prototype OP-1.
This thing looks like the if all end all synthesizer/sampler/controller. I cant imagine a better designed all in one digital music tool!
So imagine how surprised I was to find out that Teenage Engineering doesnt limit themselves to designing amazing things like the OP-1. They also create spots for some very well known companies. For example the new spot for New Balance. Check it out and you be the judge.
And if anyone rich happens to be reading this.. Then please finance the production of this turntable. Another amazing concept from Teenage Engineering just waiting to be produced. A styrofoam turntable. Ahhhh, its beautiful!
I came across Eduard Saliers work while watching his new video for Massive Attack Splitting the Atom I really liked the digital work and noticed he always partnered with the same effects studio Digital District Be sure to check out that link for some crazy post production work!
Saliers website includes some dope moleskine sketches. His videos are all phenomenal. From Raphael Saadiq to Air to Massive Attack, each video has its own distinct style. Not only that, Salier labels himself a Graphic Artist / Photographer / Director. Gotta love it when someone can comfortably slip into that many roles. Gives those of us that dont want to specialize hope! His posters and photographs carry that same high quality aesthetic. Truly an amazing creative! Look forward to seeing what else Salier comes up with in the future!
