Elle Collections

Post by // Susan

Dear Elle,

Thank you for making the Elle Collections magazine. It’s so nice to have all the “best” collections of the coming season clearly laid out in one magazine so I don’t need to pick out pieces of the collections through fashion spreads. Thank you for showing me all the different sets used for the fashion shows, the new seasons hats, the different invitations that were send, and the 5 things on my to-do list from fashion’s famous faces. Thank you.

Best regards,
Susan

Evolution of S Magazine

Post by // Michael

This weekend my dear sister spotted the premiere issue of S magazine in a stack of older fashion mags. I have posted about S Magazine before which is in my opinion the best erotic magazine published. I was so excited to flip the pages of their first issue. Being able to compare the first issue with the 10 (5 years in between them) was a lot of fun. Seeing their evolution and how their design has changed.

In the following pictures the first issue is on the left and the tenth on the right. As you can see the tenth issue has much nicer typography and design. You can really tell that they didnt concentrate too much on the art direction of the magazine but focused on the content (editorials).

Also nice to see that the Editor in Chief; Jens Stoltze has remained the same.

This is what makes collecting good magazines so nice. There is so many things one can learn if you are receptive enough!

Another Magazine

Post by // Susan

I really enjoy Another Magazine’s new concept: digital cover star. Every once in a while they choose someone new to portray. So far Charlotte Gainsbourg and Margherita Maccapani Missoni have been their ‘stars’. It’s a nice way to glimpse into the life of interesting people. I preferred the coverage on Gainsbourg because of the short film, which can be viewed here.

The Face.

Post by // Michael

You start with loving a medium, appreciating it. And finally analyzing its history. Which is the case with my slight magazine addiction. Every time I read about someone in the business or what inspired great editors the words “The Face” are mentioned. I have tried long and hard to get one in my hands but the prices on ebay when the magazine surfaces are just too high to justify. I have to content myself with this wonderful flickr pool for inspiration… Apparently the Face shaped the modern magazine. Taking chances with their content and changing the market forever.

Names like David LaChapelle, Juergen Teller, Neville Brody and Craig McDean were all part of the Face and reached their celebrity thanks in part to the work done for the amazing publication.

“The Face was a magazine started in May 1980 by Nick Logan out of his publishing house Wagadon. Logan had previously created titles such as Smash Hits, and had been an editor at the New Musical Express in the 1970s during one of its most successful periods.”

Journal de Nimes

Post by // Michael

I have posted about tenue de nimes, a denim inspired boutique in amsterdam before on twitter. It doesnt happen often that a customer can love a store before ever setting foot into it. But thats exactly what happened. If I had to put my finger on it, I guess its thanks largely to the care thats put into everything they release. Their logo and web page are superbe. The pictures of the store are always selected carefully. It seem as they have a certain standard in quality to anything they release online. Literally designing their online presence so well that one is forced to pay attention.

The journal de nimes was the natural next step for the tenue de nimes team. I saw it on issuu and was so impressed I wanted a hard copy. Fast forward a couple days later and both issue 3 and 4 where lying @ my doorstep.

Needless to say its so nice to have the large format journal in my hands. I really dig Menno and Joachims work. Joachim is quickly becoming one of my favorite creative directors The journals are a welcome piece to my small collection!
