Creative Profile ; Eduard Salier

Post by // Michael

I came across Eduard Saliers work while watching his new video for Massive Attack Splitting the Atom I really liked the digital work and noticed he always partnered with the same effects studio Digital District Be sure to check out that link for some crazy post production work!

Saliers website includes some dope moleskine sketches. His videos are all phenomenal. From Raphael Saadiq to Air to Massive Attack, each video has its own distinct style. Not only that, Salier labels himself a Graphic Artist / Photographer / Director. Gotta love it when someone can comfortably slip into that many roles. Gives those of us that dont want to specialize hope! His posters and photographs carry that same high quality aesthetic. Truly an amazing creative! Look forward to seeing what else Salier comes up with in the future!

Excellent method to monitor your objectives or goals

Post by // Michael

I had to post this excellent management method from the new york times article Are You a C.E.O. of Something? I think it would be a great way to monitor your progress for the goals you have in your private life.

Heres what Mark Pincus had to say to the following question..

Q. What else is unusual about how you run the company?

A. John Doerr [the venture capitalist] sold me on this idea of O.K.R.’s, which stands for objectives and key results. It was developed at Intel and used at Google, and the idea is that the whole company and every group has one objective and three measurable key results, and if you achieve two of the three, you achieve your overall objective, and if you achieve all three, you’ve really killed it.

We put the whole company on that, so everyone knows their O.K.R.’s. And that is a good, simple organizing principle that keeps people focused on the three things that matter — not the 10.

Then I ask everybody to write down on Sunday night or Monday morning what are your three priorities for the week, and then on Friday see how you did against them. It’s the only way people can stay focused and not burn out. And if I look at your road map and you have 10 priorities for you and your team, you probably don’t know which of the three matter, and probably none of the 10 are right.

I can look at everyone’s piece of paper, and their road map shows every item you were going to do and your predicted results and actual results, and then the results are in red if you missed them, yellow if they’re close and green if you passed them. I think road maps are a great principle just for managing your life. It keeps everybody focused, and it lets me know what trains are on or off the tracks.

The Boat That Rocked : Sartorially Splendid!

Post by // Michael

I watched The Boat that Rocked a couple days back. First off if you love music watch this movie. And if you dont, watch it anyways. Its an excellent movie.
Bill Nighy’s character Quentin was one of my favourites. Everytime the captain was on screen I had to chuckle. He really played the character perfectly. After the movie I was like, damn, he had some nice stuff on throughout the film. So I revisited the film and took some screenshots of Captain Quentin.. Yep, I was right. He’s definately got style.

S Magazine

Post by // Michael

After a 5 month wait the newest issue of S Magazine was delivered last friday. During summer, I had heard alot of positive reviews regarding the magazine. Because the cover price at the local kiosk was so expensive, I decided to be patient and subscribe to it for a year. Being that its a bi-annual publication, that makes 2 mags! The wait was finally over and after reading through it, the wait was totally worth it.
The magazine ooozes quality. The art direction is top notch. One quickly understands why its a bi annual. Its the size of a book and unlike something like vogue not full of advertisements. I counted 4 ads in the whole thing! S is chock full of amazing photo editorials and interviews.
The interviews were taken of fashion designer, directors, musicians, and artists.
S Magazine is at its root an erotic magazine. But one that is so intelligently done that it seems eroticism takes a second seat to art.

Depending on if you are looking at an editorial or reading an interview, the paper switches from glossy to matte. And the whole magazine has a very unified look thanks to its strict implementation of a grid and choice of a select few fonts.
One factor I love about S Magazine is how it suprises you when you read it. One second you’re reading about a indie directors thoughts on reality tv. And on the next page is a woman sporting nipples on her bum. Followed by a Interview with Lykke Li talking about her music and stage presence.
Its definitely not boring!
S Magazine is more than a magazine. It could pass as a coffee table book. The editorials are that good! Definitely HIGHLY recommended. I for one, cant wait for the next issue! Check their homepage below for some examples of their editorial photography and their blog…

I hate the dress shirt.

Post by // Michael

shirt by Acne

Could there be a more annoying yet critical part of every mans wardrobe than the dress shirt? For some reason I just cant get it right. I officially give up.
It all starts with buying the damn things. There are just so many things you need to consider… Buttons / Collars / Cuffs / Placket & Pleats!

Really?

Once you have that out the way you need to deal with all the different fits; Slim Fit, Relaxed Fit, Classic Fit. And just to make things interesting every company out their has their own take on each fit. So its basically a guessing game. You HAVE to try them all on in store.

Theres the one thats a little too tight.. And then the one that fits nicely but its too long. The one thats perfect except the collars are the size of miniature wings!

And then when you finally think you have it! The one that fits perfectly! You pay for it completely satisfied that you made an educated well thought out buy.

Wear it a day.

Throw it into the washing machine, shake if off and let it dry.
Try it on. Oh look!

It Shrunk.

I hate the dress shirt.

Sade // Soldier of Love

Post by // Michael

Last night we went to the pre listening of Sade’s new album Soldier of Love. The whole evening was organized flawlessly and went by way too fast. First a couple swiss artists (Marc Sway, Adrian Stern, Lea Lu) played their renditions of Sade classics. Following that they played the new Sade album.
Its amazing that an artist that has been out of the game for so long can come back so strong. If you like Sade there are no surprises on this new album. Her songwriting is top notch! A little surprise is how dope the drum programming on the new album is! The best thing about this is that its truly a long play. Not two singles packed with a bunch of mediocre songs. You can tell that they set out to create a cohesive album that shines from beginning to end. Im on my third listen this morning and its not even lunch yet. :-)

The Do

Post by // Susan

Sometimes I wonder what musics little secret is, why do some songs make me feel the way I do? Sometimes I can listen to something and it puts me in this great mood, other songs make me melancholic, sad, some remind me of different experiences in my life, and some make me so happy, and make me forget everything that I listen to them on repeat for hours (ex: green eyes by Erykah Badu) hmmm…

I just discovered The Do and listening to them puts me in a melancholic mood… I’m sitting here in our kitchen thinking of my past and all the great people that I lost contact with… Don’t ask me why, could it be her voice? the slowness of the song? the guitar? No idea. Here the video, how does it make you feel?

Weekend Web Finds

Post by // Michael

Its monday which has turned out to be the day I reveal my favorite links from the weekend.

A couple of weeks ago I watched the beautiful losers movie. Which was more or less my introduction to alot of the artists featured in the film. Whilst watching, there were alot of references to skateboarding culture. Most of the artists themselves were part of skateboarding crews. And so it seems natural that they would take a closer look at the intersection of skateboarding and art. Which is what this next set of web episodes does. Its shot in the same style of beautiful losers and so highly recommended! DIY America, Skate & Create

Anyone heard of a guy called Ji Lee? Well he’s googles creative director. Apparently a creative genius. He got alot of exposure when he pasted speech bubbles on posters in new york and got people writing their own phrases in Lee’s placed speech bubbles. Well thanks to Sight Unseen we get to see how a “creative genius” lives. There are a bunch of cool ideas in Lees apartment. Where else would you see a miniature room on the ceiling or a womans ass being attacked by a tank?

Really liked the look of this short film Pumzi Its a south african sci fi flick.. Why does that still sound weird? Youd think after District 9 I’d know better! The south africans are producing some great creative stuff lately.

Heres a little something for the design interested. Jason compiled an excellent list of recommended reading. Alot of these books are already on my shelf but there are a couple that Im hoping to get in the near future.

Interior Fascination

Post by // Michael

I have a mild fascination with interiors. being able to take a glance @ the way a room is decorated can say so much about a person. With the rise of magazines like Apartamento and websites like the selby its obvious that I am not alone. Flickr groups that allow users to show their homes or rooms have thousands of members as curious about his neighbors surroundings as I am.
This fascination is mirrored in my weekly round up of inspiration pictures. There are usually interiors nestled between pictures of beautiful woman and design in any form.

And so, when a friend was looking for interior inspiration I decided to look through the first 1000 pictures collected for the inspiration. I picked out everyone that had a interior or a nice piece of furniture in it. The collection amounted to 154 pictures. You can download them here in Zip format
Here are some examples of what you’ll find in the Zip file

And while we are on the subject there are two books Id like to suggest if you dont already have them.

Creative Space is an amazing look into the appartments of creatives from around the world. Its basically the selby in book form.

Im a sucker for brownstones. Old factory building that were later used as apartment buildings is my idea of the ideal place to live. Must be the combination of open space, exposed ventilation and brick walls… Making Brooklyn Modern one of my favourite interior design books.

Creative writing 101 //

Last night while dreaming about my cute girl next door type I was rudely awakened by the haunting sounds of The Radio Dept. Got out of bed and called a friend. We were scheduled to meet for a small skateboard session. Grabbed my bag and a book incase he was late. Turned off my laptop that still had the tumblr page I spent last night oogling @.

Et Voilà. I wont get any awards for creative writing but whatever.
